At Flex Digital, our people are the heart of everything we do. Today, we’re shining the spotlight on Tamara Toothill, our brilliant Digital Marketing Executive, as she shares her journey with us, from diving into PPC and leading her first large-scale web project, to the passions and adventures that inspire her outside of work.
- How has your journey been with Flex Digital so far?
My journey at Flex has been great! Everything from the team to the clients and the skills I have learnt so far. I’ve been at Flex for almost 2 years, and it’s been a great environment to learn and grow in. Agency isn’t for everyone; it’s fast-paced and sometimes challenging, spinning many plates, but having a great team around you for support makes it all worth it!
- What’s something new or surprising you’ve learned on the job?
Probably PPC. My background was predominantly in social media and content before, and despite not being keen on being thrown into PPC tasks initially, it’s a great area where you can see results quicker, and I have enjoyed the challenge of learning along the way.
- What part of your role makes you feel like a total rockstar?
Client comms, you’ve got to be good at this, for both the positive and negative conversations with clients. And it feels great when these conversations lead to further exciting opportunities. Something I’ve learnt to love and get good at for sure!
- What excites you most about working in the digital marketing world?
It’s both exciting and unnerving at times, but the world of digital marketing is ever-changing. Just when you think you’ve got SEO best practices or PPC down, something changes. It means the industry is never “boring” and you’re always learning something.
- If you had to explain your job to a 6-year-old, what would you say?
Imagine you have a drawing you want to show to all your friends. Instead of going to each friend’s house, you take a picture of it and show everyone on an iPad or phone. Digital marketing is like that, but for grown-ups who have things to sell. They use computers and phones to show their cool stuff to lots of people.
- What’s a small win that made a big impact for you recently?
It’s not a “small” win, but it would probably be the web design project we’re working on with an existing client. It’s my first time managing a project of this scale, and I’m excited to understand web design a bit more and project manage it from start to finish.
- Coffee, music, routine – what’s your go-to work fuel?
On an ideal morning, I like to get outside for at least an hour for fresh air and daylight (honestly does wonders!). But on those days when the snooze button gets pressed, an iced oat milk latte also does the job!
- What’s one piece of advice you’d give someone joining this industry?
Don’t be afraid to bounce around the industry when you’re first starting in the marketing industry to find a company that suits you. Try both in-house and agency, as you’ll be more suited to one over the other. And don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone, try different areas of marketing, as you may surprise yourself.
- What do you enjoy doing outside of work? Give us a glimpse into your life beyond deadlines and Basecamp pings.
Outside of work, sounders cliché but I love exploring and going on long walks (usually on a Sunday, pre roast). I also love travelling and have ticked off 15 countries so far. I also have a food Instagram, reviewing food in Bristol and beyond.
- Two truths and one lie about you (let the team guess!)
- I trained to be a chef at college
- I once broke my ankle on a trampoline
- I taught English at a school in Sri Lanka
- If your job were a meme, which one would it be?

- If your energy had a soundtrack, what song would be playing?
My music taste is a bit of everything, depending on the day/task. This could be Elvis (top 0.05% listeners worldwide 😎), Bare Jams, Pawsa (specifically ‘Bang Bang’, for motivation), Olivia Dean, & Dire Straits.
